Nokia sues OPPO in European and Asian markets

The Finnish telecom company Nokia is said to be suing OPPO for patent infringement.

Currently, Nokia is suing OPPO in Australia and other markets, and this lawsuit could also block the sale of OPPO smartphones in other markets. Germany’s Mannheim Regional Court has banned OPPO from selling smartphones in Germany for violating Nokia’s Service Enablement Platform with 4G and 5G technologies. Nokia sued OPPO for patent infringement in 2021 in several markets across Asia and Europe.

Nokia and OPPO entered into a long-term patent agreement in 2018, with the contract ending in 2021. It is also said that OPPO has to pay Nokia 3 euros per phone for the production and sale of smartphones using Nokia’s patents. In Nokia’s official statement, OPPO declined the offer to renew the contract, but continued to use these patents and faced legal action. A Nokia spokesperson said there is still a more constructive way to handle the situation.

OnePlus, which went under the same company as OPPO and became a separate brand, has not posted phone and smartwatch sales in Germany. OnePlus’ director of communications, Spencer Brink, also confirmed that the product is being sold in Germany. He said that the reason for the halt in sales was because Nokia demanded unreasonable high royalties for patents.

Nokia is a company that owns a lot of technology patents and has faced similar patent lawsuits with Lenovo and Daimler in the past. According to a report by FOSS Patents, Nokia will use the same legal team that won the case against Lenovo and Daimler in the case against OPPO.
